The island of Pico, in the Azores, made history on Sunday, July 23, by breaking the ‘Biggest Chamarrita’ record in the world, attested by a member of Guinness World Records.

According to the ‘Festas da Madalena’ Facebook page, the chamarrita had 812 “bailadores” and was danced at the Municipal Stadium.

Pico thus beat its own record, reached in 2015, at the time with 544 people.

“It is with great pride that we celebrate the achievement of this record. Proud to see that in this way our traditions are respected, renewed and projected into the future; pride in seeing that this ex-libris of our culture is a vehicle for unifying Azorean communities, a powerful alliance between us all “, wrote the Municipality of Madalena, taking a moment to thank  “all institutions and individuals, all Picoenses, all Azoreans, in particular from the Islands of the Triangle, who with their contribution made it possible to achieve this record, taking Chamarrita across borders, to the four corners of the world. “
