Winemaker Paulo Lareano has just launched a liqueur wine from Pico priced at 900 euros per bottle: Potion Licoroso DOC Pico 2003, with only 300 bottles available.
Paulo Laureano has also launched two other wines: Tarelo and Tarelo Monumental.
“Tarelo”, as we know, is part of the Azorean expression “não tens tarelo,” used to indicate “lack of judgment or wisdom”.
According to the winemaker, this was the motto for reinterpreting and creating the Tarelo brand, intending to take the expression to a new level, transforming it into a symbol of sophistication and quality.

Three distinct wines

The Tarelo brand wants to mark a new chapter in the history of Portuguese wine, emphasizing the island of Pico, “which aims to be an invitation to discover what makes each vineyard and each grape unique”.
Tarelo’s first launches are three different wines: Tarelo IG Arinto e Verdelho 2019 White, white wine with an exotic, fresh, and elegant character, with 6,600 bottles available at 30 euros; Potion Licoroso DOC Pico 2003, a 20-year-old liqueur made from grapes grown in lajido, a unique volcanic soil that gives the wines an irreproachable identity, and Monumental Arinto 2018 White, a wine from the Arinto do Pico grape variety, one of the island’s most ancient, with 1,000 bottles available at 80 euros.

With roots in the Azores

“With roots in the Azores, but with a spirit of exploration and innovation, the brand’s business plan is to explore the diversity and richness that the islands still have to offer,” says the winemaker, who explains the brand’s philosophy: “No stupid people beyond this point” is the motto that guides the strategy, “a promise of excellence, of wines that reflect the terroir where they are grown and that can be enjoyed by those who understand and value the art of winemaking,” says Paulo Laureano.
Each bottle of Tarelo tells a story of tradition, dedication, and passion, transmitted through the unique flavors and aromas of Portuguese wines, specifically from the Azores.
Paulo Laureano is more than just a winemaker; he is an artist, an educator, and, above all, a wine lover.
His journey began as an agronomist, following a fascinating path that took him through Portugal, Spain, and Australia and included a decade of teaching at the University of Évora.

In 1993, he turned to his true vocation: designing wines.
Today, he is recognized as one of Portugal’s most renowned winemakers and is an essential reference in Alentejo wines.
In 1999, the passion he shared with his family for wine led him to create his own company, a project that grew and became increasingly important in his life.
His unwavering commitment to Portuguese grape varieties expresses his respect for Portugal’s winemaking tradition and culture.
For Paulo Laureano, “wine is more than a drink; it is a form of civilization, a means by which culture is shared and celebrated.”
