Next Wednesday, October 25th, the Luso American Development Foundation (FLAD) will organize a ZOOM session to present the groundbreaking study ‘Portuguese immigrants and descendants in the USA in the 21st century’, a profile of the around 1.3 million Portuguese descendants identifying as such (over 5 years old) living in the United States.

This online session, in partnership with the Consulate General of Portugal in San Francisco and the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at Fresno State, will occur on October 25th at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific Time), and follows the in-person presentations in June in Washington, New York, and Massachusetts. The session is open to all who wish to participate.

Ambassador of Portugal to the US, Francisco Duarte Lopes, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA), Congressman Jim Costa (CA), FLAD’s President, Rita Faden, and Congressman David Valadão (CA)-Washington DC (picture, above)

The Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, Pedro Perestrelo Pinto, and FLAD’s president, Rita Faden, will deliver opening remarks. The study will be presented by two authors, Alda Botelho Azevedo and Lara P. Tavares, from the University of Lisbon. The online session will then be open to the audience to hear the participants’ questions and comments and discuss the challenges ahead.

This study was commissioned by FLAD to increase the knowledge of the demographic and socioeconomic profile of the Portuguese-American community in the United States and better target the initiatives to strengthen the Portuguese-American community and bring the Diaspora closer to Portugal.

Results show 1.3 million Portuguese descendants identifying as having Portuguese ancestry. This community is made up mainly of generations who were not born in Portugal. This community is fully integrated into American society and present in the different sectors of activity in the US. The number of Portuguese descendants who speak Portuguese is growing, and this group has some specific characteristics worth discussing.

While the largest population of Portuguese immigrants and descendants continues to live in New England, results show a growing population of Portuguese ancestry in less traditional states for Portuguese immigrants, such as Florida, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina.
