The Regional Statistics Office of the Azores (SREA) announced yesterday that in 2023, there were almost 3.8 million overnight stays in the Azores, corresponding to a 15.1% increase on the previous year.
In December, the region recorded 120.6 thousand overnight stays in hotels as a whole, local accommodation, and rural tourism in December 2023, representing a decrease of 5.4% compared to the previous month. The national market was the strongest in the Azores. National residents accounted for 64.9 thousand overnight stays (53.8% of the total), while the foreign market (residents abroad) accounted for 55.7 thousand overnight stays (46.2% of the total). Both markets showed lower results than the previous month: the domestic market fell by 9.1%, and the foreign market fell by 0.5%.

Among the various accommodation establishments, hotels accounted for 64% of overnight stays (77.2 thousand overnight stays), while local accommodation accounts for 32.9% (39.7 thousand overnight stays), and rural tourism accounts for 3% (3.7 thousand overnight stays). In December 2023, São Miguel was the island that welcomed the most people in tourist
with 84.3 thousand people (72.1% of total overnight stays), followed by Terceira of overnight stays), followed by Terceira with
19.6 thousand overnight stays ((16.7%) and Faial with 6 thousand overnight stays (5.1%).
