The municipality of Angra do Heroísmo has signed an agreement with the University of the Azores (UAc) to construct a new university residence on the Angra campus.
The UAc submitted an application to the National Student Accommodation Program for the creation of three new university residences in Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada, and Horta, the approval of which does not fully fund the amount of investment needed to build the residences, and has therefore resorted to creating protocols with the municipalities to co-fund the construction costs. The total construction budget for the three residences is 18 million euros, and the price is split between the University of the Azores’ own funds, PRR co-funding, and municipal co-funding. In Angra do Heroísmo, the new residence will cost around 6 million euros, with the municipality of Angra providing support of 901,000 euros. “The city of Angra has been a constant partner of the University of the Azores in various initiatives aimed at improving the conditions and well-being of students and has therefore associated itself with this project through co-financing support for the construction of a new university residence, which will be an essential addition to the Angra do Heroísmo campus of the University of the Azores, providing it with a space that offers a variety of amenities that guarantee all the conditions for improving this educational infrastructure, thus facilitating access to education. The total construction budget for the three residences is 18 million euros, with the cost split between the University of the Azores’ own funds, PRR co-funding, and municipal co-funding. In Angra do Heroísmo, the new residence will cost around 6 million euros, with the Angra municipality contributing 901,000 euros and providing a more comfortable study environment for current and new students,” said Guido Teles, Vice Mayor. All in all, this project to build three student residences at the University of the Azores, which is due to be completed in March 2026, guarantees 270 new beds for students, 100 in Angra do Heroísmo, 120 in Ponta Delgada and 50 in Horta.
