Google’s “Cloud” transatlantic submarine cable will have a mooring point in the Azores. The information was confirmed by the company itself.
Google said, “This week, we are sharing plans to extend the system to the Azores,” without revealing which island the cable will be moored on.
DI knows that Google is in talks with the local authorities in the Azores to decide how the system will be extended to the islands.
The “Cloud” submarine cable, announced in September 2023, will connect the United States, Bermuda, and Portugal and is scheduled to start operating in 2026. It will be the first to connect Bermuda to Europe.
“Named after the Portuguese word for ‘cloud’, the cable will improve network resilience in the Atlantic, helping to meet the growing demand for digital services and establishing more locations as digital hubs,” the company pointed out.
In October 2023, the then Minister for Infrastructure (PS), João Galamba, revealed that the government had insisted “immensely” that the Azores be included in Google’s submarine cable project.

“Whether it will happen or not, I don’t know, you’ll have to ask the company and the Regional Government. We insisted a lot that the Azores be included, that’s for sure,” he said at the time, speaking to journalists following a request from IL in the Azores about the region’s inclusion in the project.
“The Azores have enormous potential in these areas of connectivity, due to their geographical location they are a unique asset in the world of connectivity and data and if they can be included in this project, it’s obviously excellent for the country and it’s obviously excellent for the Azores, because it represents a remarkable development opportunity for the region and, therefore, to reassure IL, they don’t have to worry that we have taken this initiative,” João Galamba added at the time.
Portugal was already part of Google’s “Equiano” cable, which connects the country to Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, and Saint Helena.
“Google’s investment embodies our vision for Portugal in the telecommunications and data sectors: establishing our country as a thriving connectivity gateway to Europe, promoting robust connections with other continents. The Portuguese government considers this investment to be significant, and it was only possible thanks to the great coordination and dialog between the Ministry, Portuguese entities and Google,” said João Galamba when the “Cloud” cable was announced.
“Our aim is to turn these information highways into catalysts that attract additional investment in cutting-edge technological sectors, propelling the country towards an effective digital transformation,” he added.
