The 500th anniversary of the birth of the poet Luís de Camões will be the theme of the 2025 edition of the Sanjoaninas, which will be held from June 20 to 29.
As usual, the theme for next year’s edition was presented at yesterday’s Sanjoaninas 2024 debriefing lunch.
“We’re going to dedicate the festivities to Ilha dos Amores, which is one of the themes addressed in the Lusiads, in the ninth and tenth cantos, and which apparently has a connection to Terceira Island. It’s a song that talks about the journey back to Portugal and it’s a way of addressing a historical issue, thus maintaining tradition,” said Guido Teles, Vice Mayor of Angra do Heroísmo.
Like this year’s theme, it is a national issue, and Guido Teles believes in its “historical relevance for our island and our municipality.”
The vice president believes this is a “fascinating” theme that ” can be used well in all the parades and pageants.”
Asked about the subject, Guido Teles confirmed that the model for the festivities will remain the same.
“The people who come to the Sanjoaninas already know what they’re counting on, which doesn’t mean that the festivities will be the same from year to year. This is a basic structure that guarantees predictability and identity to the festivities, but with changes to the theme and all the preparation of performances that are completely different from one year to the next. It seems to me that this strategy of creating a basic structure, not only for communication but also for programming, has been a winner and should be maintained,” he said.
