Ponta Delgada’s Municipal Assembly unanimously approved the cooperation program contract between the municipality and the University of the Azores, intended to support the construction of a new university residence in the city to the tune of one million euros.
Pedro Nascimento Cabral, Mayor of Ponta Delgada, said that this support will increase the University of the Azores’ capacity to attract new students and contribute to the city’s social and economic development.
“Ponta Delgada City Council wants to help develop a university city and this project will improve the conditions for welcoming new students,” said the Mayor of Ponta Delgada.

Pedro Nascimento Cabral also said that “Ponta Delgada City Council intends to be an active partner in the development and progress of the University of the Azores,” guaranteeing all the financial conditions for the completion of this investment project.
“We made this commitment right from the start,” said the mayor, adding that constructing the new university residence will allow dozens of young people to fulfill their dream of studying and living in Ponta Delgada.
The new university residence, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026, will provide 120 beds, distributed between 48 double rooms and 24 single rooms, four of which are for people with reduced mobility.
