Nuno Barata, a member of the Regional Legislative Assembly for the Liberal Initiative (IL) political party, accuses Portos dos Açores of having “negative impacts on the economy of Terceira island.”
According to a statement issued by the IL, the company’s management has refused requests from shipowners to “beach, on the embankments of the port of Praia da Vitória, vessels that needed maintenance and ship repair work.”
“In recent weeks, Iniciativa Liberal has learned that the management of Portos dos Açores, S.A., was contacted by some shipowners who wanted to beach their vessels for maintenance and ship repair operations at the shipyard in the Port of Praia da Vitória, and that these requests were refused,” reads a request submitted to the Azorean Parliament.

“These refusals have forced shipowners to look for other shipyards to carry out the desired operations, which has added costs to the operations, and Portos dos Açores, S.A., has thus refused a financial windfall as a result of not operating in Praia da Vitória, not to mention the negative impacts on the economy of Terceira island as a result of not carrying out such work in Praia da Vitória,” adds the Liberal Initiative Assemblymenber.

According to Nuno Barata, with Portos dos Açores’s refusal, “there is a company on Terceira Island, which is going to carry out the maintenance work on these vessels, which will have to relocate its resources to the Madalena do Pico shipyards, with all the added costs associated with this.”
