The PS/Azores MPs elected for Faial, Lúcio Rodrigues, and Inês Sá, have expressed deep concern about the closure of the Cedros HP Residence for the Elderly on the island of Faial and are calling for urgent intervention by the Regional Government of the Azores to ensure the continuity of this essential service to the community.
“The residence plays a fundamental role in supporting families and the elderly, offering quality care, especially when there is a lack of this type of service on the island of Faial. The closure of this institution is not a viable option, as it puts the well-being of its residents at risk and leaves their families without alternative answers,” said Inês Sá.
The parliamentarian stressed that this issue only highlights the lack of responses on the island regarding Residential Structures for the Elderly (nursing homes), with only the one at Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Horta having run out.
In this context, she argues that “it is becoming increasingly clear that there is an urgent need to increase the number of places to meet the needs of the elderly and their families.” She accuses the Regional Government of the Azores of ignoring this need despite its promises.
In the immediate future, the deputies from Faial call on the Regional Government to find a solution to avoid the closure of the facility on July 31st.” The Regional Government has known for some time that the risk of this outcome was imminent, but time has passed and it has done nothing,” she stressed.
The MP emphasized that the Cedros old people’s home is the only one of its kind in the parish, serving the local community and other areas of the island of Faial.
“We call on the sensitivity and responsibility of the Regional Government of the Azores to intervene quickly and effectively. We cannot allow our elderly to be neglected and our community to lose such a vital service,” said the MP, for whom guaranteeing a secure future for our elderly must be an absolute priority,” she concluded, quoted in a note released by the party and sent to the newspaper.
