In a press release yesterday, IL’s Regional Assembly member. Nuno Barata called for an “urgent need” for intervention “in the structure and operation” of the Lajes Civil Aerogare, pointing out serious flaws that jeopardize the safety of workers, users, and civil aviation operations.
“The Lajes Civil Airfield is one of those cases that should concern us,” he said, pointing out “the degrading situation the airfield infrastructure is in, but not only the structure, also its operation.”
The press release quotes an intervention by IL’s sole deputy in the Legislative Assembly, published on the party’s social networks.
Nuno Barata warned of the “infestation of pigeons” outside the infrastructure, criticizing “the unprofessional way in which the terminal is operating”.
“Today is like nothing we’ve ever seen. This is one of those situations that needs to be looked at carefully, not least because the Regional Government’s organizational structure purposely left the management of the terminal in the hands of the vice-presidency,” he stressed.

The Liberal MP also claimed that “the Regional Government’s figures don’t correspond to the figures of entrepreneurs in the tourism and catering sector”.
“We have to look at the figures. Because in Terceira, the boot doesn’t match the ankle. We have exponential increases in passengers embarking and disembarking at Lajes, but what is certain is that the figures for overnight stays and what the entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and the HORECA (Hotel, Restaurant, and Cafeteria) channel say don’t match up,” he pointed out.
