The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA), Luís Garcia, considered yesterday that philharmonics “are true schools of citizenship”, stressing that “music becomes a means through which fundamental values such as discipline, cooperation, respect, and dedication are learned”.
“Philharmonics are true bastions against cultural exclusion, bringing music to everyone and not just a few,” said the President of the Assembly at the Centenary Commemorative Ceremony of the Sociedade Filarmónica Recreio Musical Ribeirinhense, held yesterday at the institution’s headquarters, stressing that ‘this is a work of incalculable value’.
On the occasion, the President of the Azorean Parliament stressed that “a century of life is a truly remarkable achievement”, referring particularly to the “challenges that institutions like this face, especially in small communities like the parish of Ribeirinha”.
“In this case, the continuous effort and unwavering commitment of everyone involved is even more demanding. It is precisely this ability to resist and adapt that makes this celebration even more significant,” said the President of the Assembly.
During his speech, the President left a word of thanks to all the musicians and leaders of the Philharmonic who “have dedicated their time and talent to this noble cause” and added, “I am well aware of the problems that rock this institution, may this centenary be an incentive and a renewal of energy so that it can continue to play its vital role in our community”.
At the solemn session, President Luís Garcia also praised the “intergenerational nature” of the philharmonics in the Azores, saying that “there are few places that manage to unite different generations for a common goal”, adding that “it is in this intergenerational coexistence that citizens are educated and formed”.
The solemn session commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Sociedade Filarmónica Recreio Musical Ribeirinhense also included tributes to various musicians who have contributed significantly to the history and development of the philharmonic throughout its 100 years of existence.
