The leader of the PS/Azores, Francisco César, has announced the creation of a Public Policy Academy.
“I promised, when I ran for office, to create a Public Policy Academy, a kind of university, in which young people, whether militants or non-militants, who want to take part, will have exactly the space to do so,” he said.
Francisco César spoke on Sunday at the first edition of the Regional Meeting of Young Socialists, promoted by the Socialist Youth (JS) Azores.
“I have invited one of our legislators, Pedro Alves, who used to be secretary-general of the Socialist Youth at the national level and is currently vice-president of the parliamentary group, to take on the role of the next rector of the Public Policy Academy. I would very much like you all to get involved, and I can guarantee that the Socialist Party will ensure that no one will have any difficulty in participating,” he said at the same event, which took place in Lagoa.
In another area, Francisco César stressed, according to a party press release, the importance of young Azoreans having opportunities to qualify outside the archipelago.
“The new policy we want to implement in the Azores is not concerned with young people going outside the region to get qualifications and discover new worlds. Quite the opposite. What we want is for them to go, to get to know other worlds, to qualify and – if they want to – to have the chance to come back and apply what they’ve learned and what they’ve gotten to know here,” he stressed.
For Francisco César, housing is one of the central themes for the emancipation of young people.
He stressed the need to expand the supply of affordable housing in the Azores. “The emancipation of young Azoreans is only achieved when they can access decent housing, like employment,” he stressed.
Francisco César suggested building new residences, rehabilitating existing properties for students, and considering innovative programs such as hosting students in nursing homes.

SATA stores
On Thursday, Carlos Silva, vice president of the PS parliamentary group in the Azorean Assembly, accused the regional government and the chairman of SATA’s board of directors of “failing to tell the truth” about the announced savings of 1.5 million euros from the closure of the airline’s stores in urban centers.
Carlos Silva said the government’s response to a request from the PS reveals that “the only possible saving results from the end of the payment of rents and monthly charges, the total annual value of which is around 115,000 euros, around 8% of the 1.5 million euros advertised.”

The new leadership of the parliamentary group was elected on Monday.
