Today, Artur Lima, the Vice President of the Government of the Azores, and Susana Mira Leal, the Rector of the University of the Azores, signed the contract program to support the University’s three-year organization starting in 2024.
“The signing of this program contract, between the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the University of the Azores, allocates an amount of 950,000 euros, which corresponds to an increase of 150,000 euros compared to 2023 and a difference of 600,000 euros compared to the 350,000 euros allocated in 2020,” said Artur Lima.
The investment will strengthen the University of the Azores’ competitiveness, strengthen its training offer along the Angra do Heroísmo, Horta, and Ponta Delgada hubs, diversify audiences, and respond to the region’s needs.
“The document also provides for the strengthening of the distance learning offer, making the University of the Azores more attractive to students from all the islands, the country and abroad,” announced the Vice-President of the Government.
“In this sense, the signing of this program contract will allow the Azorean academy to invest in technical, digital and human resources for distance learning,” said Artur Lima.

The funding allocated by the Azorean government seeks to ensure that the academy has the necessary means to operate and develop its tripartite organization of Angra do Heroísmo, Horta, and Ponta Delgada.
“The University of the Azores plays a fundamental role, because only through education can we hope to achieve satisfactory levels of full social and economic development in the archipelago,” he said.
The program contract now signed is the result of ongoing work between the two institutions to perfect the original document and respond to the region’s interests.
