The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA), Luís Garcia, yesterday challenged the elected members of the regional, national, and European parliaments “to work together to promote a Constitutional Review” that, among other things, “deepens Regional Autonomy and is approved in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of Autonomy”.
“The Legislative Assembly has already done significant work, with broad consensus among the parties represented. Now, we must continue this effort at a national level to ensure that the Constitutional Review reflects the needs and interests of the Azores,” said the President of the Azorean Parliament during the parliamentary meeting, which took place yesterday in Horta.
In the context of deepening Autonomy, President Luís Garcia emphasized the urgency of revising the Regional Finance Law, which he considers “a tough but necessary and urgent battle.” He also stressed the importance of “a collaborative effort” to reach an effective solution in these matters.

In addition to this critical challenge, the President of the Legislative Assembly highlighted “the need to promote a culture of dialogue and compromise” between the Azoreans’ representatives in the three parliaments. He stressed that “with this meeting we seek to build a platform for understanding and joint action in defense of the Region’s best interests” and stated that he is confident that “this is what the Azoreans expect from us.”
“The success of public policies depends on our capacity for dialogue and collaboration,” added President Luís Garcia, emphasizing the unanimous consensus that it is essential to promote more meetings of this nature to strengthen these interactions.
The meeting, which brought together deputies elected to the Assembly of the Republic, the European Parliament, and the Legislative Assembly, allowed for an in-depth reflection on the region’s main challenges, emphasizing the need for coordination and collaboration between the different levels of representation.
