The President of the Government of the Azores reaffirmed what has been an Azorean flag that it is the State that “must make the necessary investment to replace the current ring of fiber optic cables with a new modern one called smart cable, which has sensors to provide intelligent information to new data and new knowledge, taking advantage of the distribution of the cable and also ensuring that it has redundant moorings, thus opening up its function as a ring and with more moorings and an upgrade in its data transmission.”
Therefore, stressed José Manuel Bolieiro, “our resilience in demanding has now been answered by the current Government of the Republic and the Minister for Infrastructure. We are therefore in a position to realize that it is time, at a time when the useful life of the current cables is coming to an end, to be able to replace them and with this lever in technology, not only in redundancy, but also in the upgrade of pairs for transmission and more data speed, as well as the condition of the sensors being a bet on smart cable.”
He said that “the same level of demand and resilience” of the Government of the Azores “is also applied to the inter-island connection. To be perfectly clear, this is the responsibility of the state, not the governments of the Azores and Madeira.
“Inter-island fiber optic ring is the responsibility of the Portuguese National Government.”
In this regard, he pointed out that the new Government of the Republic, that is, the new Minister for Infrastructure has set up, as we had hoped, a working group that naturally includes ANACOM, the Ministry for Infrastructure, the Ministry for Finance, the Ministry for the Economy, the Ministry for the Sea and the Ministry for Territorial Cohesion, so that, in fact, on the 15th we can have the first physical meeting to start working on this requirement. We estimate that we can have this connection in the next two years.”
“It’s good that a company with a digital business, like NOS, feels this co-responsibility from the state in the investment.”
The President of the Government was pleased that NOS, after investing in São Miguel, Terceira, and Faial, will now invest in the other islands. “This is fundamental, I’m very convinced of the market economy, competition, and competitiveness, not only for the quality of the producer but also in terms of price. Congratulations to NOS for this expansion, not only because it already has communications coverage and a digital network.”
The “excellence” of NOS
In his speech, José Manuel Bolieiro began by highlighting NOS’ commitment to opening cinemas in Parque Atlântico in a “new day for culture with leisure and leisure with culture.”
He expressed his congratulations and satisfaction at NOS’ quality offer in the region “in terms of leisure and cinema culture, which makes its excellence and quality known.”
By the way, he hoped that those who had not been movie lovers before would become movie lovers due to the quality of the films chosen to be shown here.”
He associated NOS with “modernity,” “progress,” and “excellence.” He wanted to express his gratitude to the CEO of NOS “for having the capacity to intervene in so many areas of business, but also in the areas of serving people well.”
“All the investment is very welcome, in the technological area as well as in this leisure area,” which ”reveals a strategic sense, a more universal presence in the national territory, as well as reaching planetary centrality.”
For José Manuel Bolieiro, the Azores “are undergoing a transformation, precisely because they want to move from an outermost region, conditioned by all the constraints of geographical dispersion, remoteness, in need of public subsidy from the country and the European Union (…) to a central region of modernity, and relevant as nature for the economies of the future, for the country, for the European Union.”
“This process of transformation in the strategic direction of the governance of the Azores also helps the country and the European Union,” he stressed.
After addressing the risk of closing the cinemas in Parque Atlântico, the Government President highlighted NOS’s “quality of excellence.” “We have a cinema in Ponta Delgada, a cinema in São Miguel, and quality cinema in the Azores. So, I’d like to say a word to the management of Parque Atlântico: what a joy it is to have this offer here in this magnificent space. I’ve been watching these theaters in their size and quality now, sitting in magnificent chairs, looking at super-qualified images, even this sound quality that is so comprehensive and immersive,” he said.
He spoke of NOS’ social responsibility “to help develop territories, develop their populations and their opportunities for culture, leisure and communications.”
He stressed the importance of NOS, which has “shown itself to be a partner in the development of the Azores, digital development, new technologies and communications.”
“Thank you for this entrepreneurship and for your attention to the Azores and the Azoreans, for doing the best to the best that the Azoreans deserve,” he concluded.
An investment of half a million euros
For his part, the Mayor of Ponta Delgada, Pedro Nascimento Cabral, considered the inauguration of the new NOS cinema complex as “a significant moment in the consolidation of Ponta Delgada as a strategic hub for innovation and development in the Azores,” reinforcing the city as “a reference destination not only for leisure and culture but also for private investment.”
“The arrival of this type of investment in Ponta Delgada is a direct reflection of the trust that major brands and companies have in our city,” he said.
This half-million-euro investment includes technology focused on the user experience. The rooms are equipped with digital laser projection, an immersive sound system, and ergonomic chairs.
