On October 6, the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of the Azores, through officers from the Madalena do Pico Police Station of the Horta Police Division, arrested a 43-year-old man strongly suspected of committing the crime of drug trafficking.
The incident occurred at Madalena do Pico airport after a suitcase was detected and identified, arousing specific and well-founded suspicions.
Given the above, steps were immediately taken to locate and intercept the suitcase’s owner, awaiting boarding to Ponta Delgada.
The police raids carried out at the scene led to the seizure of a significant amount of narcotics, which could be identified as 17,764 doses of hashish, which were inside the suitcase, as well as cash, which was suspected of coming from this illegal activity.
After the detainee was brought before the competent judicial authority, he was ordered to undergo the most severe coercive measure, pre-trial detention.
The Azores Regional Command stresses the importance of the intervention carried out by the authorities since the activity of drug trafficking at Madalena do Pico Airport, which was very damaging to the community, has ceased.
