According to a PSD press release, 250 delegates are expected at the Pavilhão do Mar, the “highest turnout ever” for a general meeting of the Azorean Social Democrats.
The highlight of the congress will take place on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m., with speeches by PSD president and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, PSD/Azores leader and Regional Government José Manuel Bolieiro, and PSD/Madeira president and Madeiran executive Miguel Albuquerque.
The meeting of the Azorean Social Democrats will kick off today at 8pm, with a speech by José Manuel Bolieiro.
On Saturday, the party’s new regional bodies will be elected, and the seven thematic proposals will be voted on. These proposals focus on demographics, firefighters, the region’s geostrategic position, housing, education, employment, the Regional Finance Law, and the role of the Azores in the European Union.
The 26th Regional Congress takes place after Bolieiro was re-elected in July for a third term as party leader with 99.3% of the vote, in an election in which he was the only candidate.
When he presented his candidacy at the time, Bolieiro said that he “strongly believes” that the development of the Azores can benefit from the region’s “geostrategic position,” defending the focus on “science, technology, and innovation.”
José Manuel Bolieiro was first elected leader of the Azorean Social Democrats in 2019 and re-elected in 2022 after becoming president of the regional government in 2020.
