
According to data from the Regional Statistics Service (SREA), the average regular gross monthly salary per worker, which excludes, among other salary components, vacation, and Christmas bonuses, rose by around 8% in the Azores.
The SREA compared the September figures for this year with the same month in 2023, concluding that the gross salary rose from 1,164 euros to 1,258 euros.
These figures show the average monthly gross basic pay per worker, corresponding only to basic pay. This “increased by 7.8%, from 1,092 euros in September 2023 to 1,177 euros in September 2024,” says the Azores Regional Statistics Office.
When allowances and supplements are considered, the average gross monthly remuneration per employee “increased by 8.2%, from 1,333 euros in September 2023 to 1,442 euros a year later”.
“Discounting inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, which was 122.162 in September 2024 (for Portugal), the salaries analyzed (total, regular, and basic) recorded real year-on-year changes of 5.9% for the total, 5.8% for the regular and 5.5% for the basic,” says the SREA. In terms of the various economic activities, the statistics office points out that, in September of this year, gross basic pay varied between 843 euros in Administrative and support services activities and 1,967 euros in Education activities, varying by 10% and 9.1%, respectively.

Total gross pay “varied between 1,036 euros in Agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing and 2,756 euros in Transportation and storage, varying by +8% and +15.2%, respectively.”
The SREA publication adds that regular gross pay ranged from 889 euros in administrative and support services activities to 2,321 euros in electricity, gas, steam, hot and cold water, and cold air activities, “varying by 12.5% and 4.1% respectively.”
It goes on to say that in public administration, there was “an increase in average total remuneration of 7.4%, from 1,552 euros in September 2023 to 1,668 euros in September 2024”.
In the private sector, “the average total remuneration recorded a positive year-on-year change (+8.5%), going from 1,277 euros in September 2023 to 1,386 euros a year later”.
