The Azores were awarded at the Grand Final of the World Travel Awards 2024
The Archipelago renewed its title this Sunday, November 24th, at what is considered the “Oscars of Tourism.” The awards ceremony, held in Funchal, Madeira, brought together the main leaders of the tourism sector from the five continents.
“It is a great recognition at an international level,” says Luís Capdeville, President of Visit Azores, emphasizing that this type of tourism is particularly important for the region. Those who visit the Azores seek an experience, and it is in the adventure that we can provide to those who visit us, which leaves a mark and makes them want to come back,” he guarantees.

The Azores beat destinations such as Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, and New Zealand, and were nominated in the same category in the sector’s most important awards. In March of this year, the archipelago won the title of Best Adventure Destination in Europe for the fourth time, confirming that the leadership has been maintained since 2020.
Also, in 2024, the Azores became the first archipelago in the world recognized by Earth Check as a sustainable destination. “We are on the right track and have the right vision, aligned with the objectives of the Government of the Azores,” says Luís Capdeville. He emphasizes that these are achievements not only of all professionals linked to the sector, both public and private but also of all Azoreans. The President of Visit Azores adds that the destination’s communication for 2025 is already being worked on and will bring some surprises.

The World Travel Awards have been awarded annually since 1993 to reward excellence in various areas of the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. The winners are selected based on the voting of thousands of tourism professionals internationally and are also open to the public.
