The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA), Luís Garcia, yesterday highlighted “the tireless work” carried out by the São Miguel Seniors Association through the Zero Waste project, which relies on the commitment of 66 volunteers who, “with dedication and social awareness, have brought essential support to those who need it most in São Miguel”.
“With support for 121 families, 55 homeless people and 15 institutions, this project is an inspiring example of how solidarity and commitment can fight hunger and food waste, transforming lives,” said the President of the Legislative Assembly during a visit to the Zero Waste program’s treatment and sanitization center, which took place yesterday in Ponta Delgada.
On occasion, the President of the Azorean Parliament praised “the great capacity for innovation and creativity of this association in finding solutions to a problem as complex as food waste,” resulting in the involvement of various partners ranging from anonymous donors, large retailers, institutions and companies, “a collaboration that allows us to combat this urgent social challenge that is hunger,” said Luís Garcia.
“This project can serve as a model for other communities,” said President Luís Garcia, suggesting that it ‘serve as inspiration for the creation of similar initiatives on the other islands of the Azores, recognizing the commitment of volunteers and donors, ‘whose effort is essential to carry out this important mission of building a fairer and more supportive society’, concludes a note from the Azorean parliament.
