According to a statement from the regional government, the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility, and Infrastructure, has just awarded the contract to rebuild the wall of Praia Formosa on the island of Santa Maria, which was affected by instability.
The bad weather caused a section of about 30 meters to collapse, and restoring safety conditions at the site became necessary.
The services of the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility, and Infrastructures, through the Regional Directorate for Public Works, carried out a needs assessment and drew up the respective execution project, explaining the regional government.
The inspection of the affected area revealed that the instability occurred in an area that had been the target of considerable excavation in the wall’s foundation, which led to landslides that eventually caused the wall to collapse.
The work, which cost 147,890 euros, was awarded to the contractor André Oliveira, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda.
Thus, the wall will be rebuilt in the affected section based on a solution of a cyclopean concrete gravity support wall to contain the land. The stone guard wall will also be rebuilt.
The same note explains that the back of the wall will be filled in using a backfill of compacted lapilli, which will also serve as a base layer for replacing the concrete sidewalk and the bituminous sidewalk parking area.
The statement concludes that concrete will also be filled in in some places near the affected section.
