Sociedade Filarmónica Estrela D’Alva marked its 138th anniversary with a vast commemorative program.
The mayor of Lagoa (CML), Frederico Sousa, congratulated the philharmonic society on its anniversary, saying that “the existence and continuity of this Philharmonic over these many years is to be commended, especially given the importance that philharmonic bands have for Lagoa and also for the Azores, for the tradition and island cultural heritage that they represent”, according to a press release sent by the CML.
“Through music and non-formal education, we can educate and instill a spirit of unity and teamwork in young people, fostering a passion for cultural traditions. It is for this reason, moreover, that Lagoa Town Hall supports, both financially and logistically, the events that take place and that culturally dignify the territory of Lagoa,” said the mayor, quoted in the same press release.
The municipality of Lagoa “thus considers the existence of philharmonic societies essential for Lagoa, promoting their social and cultural development in the municipality.”
As part of the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Star and the Anniversary of the Philharmonic, the Cantar às Estrelas (Singing to the Stars) took place, which is in its 15th edition and in which 19 musical groups took part. They were welcomed at the Paços dos Concelho building, singing songs alluding to the tradition of the Santa Cruz Mother Church, where they also performed in a symbolic tribute to Our Lady of the Star, it reads.
This celebration also included the opening of the ornate room in honor of the patron saint, Our Lady of the Star, in which all those present could participate in the candlelight procession, followed by a mass in honor of Our Lady of the Star. The Philharmonic Society’s anniversary celebrations culminated with a concert by this institution, and there was also a festive mass in honor of the patron saint, which was brightened up by the performance of the Estrela D’Alva Philharmonic and the Lira do Rosário Philharmonic Band.
