Sereia Fora Do Mar – New Original Single – Released at the end of 2024!
Written by: Marisa Silva Rocha (Fadista)
I released a new original single a few days before Thanksgiving 2024, on 11-24-24, called “Sereia fora do mar,” a poem by José M. Raposo in 2020. I always wanted to do a fado of that poem but was limited on music resources to produce a tune for the words. This poem is unique and specific to me. It was written “on the fly” by a very well-known poet in our community as a tribute to one of my tattoos (right arm), which often shows when I sing with a microphone. The fado-poema is available on all music streaming platforms.
Keep an open mind while listening – because it is definitely a different sort of fado tune and does not follow a traditional song structure, but it is more of a poem in song form. It is out of the box and transports you into a different realm of mermaids, crisp, salty sea air, and love that knows no boundaries or limits! It was received very well in California, the East Coast, Canada, Madeira, the Azores, and Mainland Portugal. I am very grateful for everyone’s support in my music journey and their kind words that uplift me with encouragement and motivation.
I would like to formally thank Sr. Professor Diniz Borges for sharing Sereia fora do mar with over 500+ of his Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute supporters. Of course, I was in absolute shock and filled with an abundance of gratitude.
I am grateful to all the people who have made my fado journey so special, just like Sr. Diniz! MUCH LOVE to you all! Below are the lyrics of the fado poem. I would love to hear your thoughts on the tune!

LETRA
Com Netuno eu vivia,
Nas profundezas do mar.
Mas houve um certo dia,
Que eu o fado quis cantar.
Era muito grande a mágoa,
Que tinha na minha voz,
Que eu saltei fora d´agua
E aqui estou pra todos vós.
Não quero de Netuno a guerra,
Nem viver entre os corais.
Eu prefiro estar na terra,
Vivendo entre os mortais.
Eu quero um homem ter,
Toda a vida para amar.
Pois por isso hei de ser,
Sereia fora do mar.
This is my 3rd single available on all music streaming platforms. My 2nd one was also an original, written by Rui Nova of Portugal, called “Este Fado Tão Amado” released in 2022. I filmed a feature music video and released it in 2023
My first one was a cover of Amália Rodrigues’ “Alfama,” which was released in 2021 and had a music video on the same launch date.

CD was launched in 2022 with a total of 9 tunes; of which included my first two singles – “Alfama” and “Este Fado Tão Amado” (of which the album was named after; my first original). I am unsure if the future will have more new music, singles, music videos, or projects for me. Still, I can say that I am very proud of what I have already accomplished in such a small amount of time (some hate when I say this), especially with lots of obstacles and roadblocks that have come my way.
Music will always be a part of me, whether the public sees/hears it or not—it lives in me every day and will never go away.
Singing fado for the community for the past nine years, but especially heavily over the last five years, has taught me valuable lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
I have enough memories and experiences over these last few years to fill a novel!
And maybe one day, I should do just that.
We invite our readers to check with Novidades every Wednesday for this weekly segment by Fadista Marisa Silva Rocha.
