The leader of the PS-Azores has just presented the first edition of the New Future Academy, a Socialist initiative that will “train young people for a New Future in the Region” from March 14 to 16.
This is a partnership between the PS, JS/Açores, the PS parliamentary groups in the Region and in the Republic, and MEP André Franqueira Rodrigues. It fulfills a commitment established at the last Congress of the Azorean Socialists.
“From the outset, we have always said that the Socialist Party in the Azores has an obligation to open up to society and to qualify all those who are here, especially the younger public. For three days, young socialists, or not, can learn, socialize and work to improve their knowledge in various areas,” said Francisco César,
During the initiative’s presentation at a press conference, MEP André Franqueira Rodrigues warned of what he considers to be the “excessive polarization of the debate” and stressed that the New Future Academy contributes “to political literacy with greater knowledge and clarification,” especially at a time when we are witnessing an “increasingly conflictive and polarized” public debate.
Under the coordination of Pedro Delgado Alves, PS deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, the New Future Academy will focus on public policies and thematic areas relevant to young people. A significant part of the program will target axes such as Youth Employment, housing and Energy Transition, and the Environment.

“Within this framework, we have mobilized people who have worked in the area and from various perspectives, namely from the construction of local and regional policies,” such as ‘Carlos Pereira, former president of PS-Madeira and member of the Portuguese Parliament; Marina Gonçalves, vice-president of PS and former Minister of Housing, and Andreia Carreiro, former regional director of Energy,’ who will be joined by Pedro Vaz (vice-president of the Parliamentary Environment Committee) and Thomas Bajada, (member of the European Parliament and rapporteur for water sustainability practices).
António Vitorino (former European Commissioner), Vasco Cordeiro (outgoing President of the Committee of the Regions and former President of the Regional Government), Alexandra Leitão (former Minister and current Parliamentary Leader of the PS), Pedro Siza Vieira (former Minister for the Economy and Digital Transition), and Isabel Almeida Rodrigues (former Secretary of State and Member of Parliament) will also attend the event.
The leader of JS-Açores, Russell Sousa, said that this New Future Academy reveals “what the PS wants for the future of the Azores”, which involves “youth”.
