An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 (SIVISA source) was felt at around 7:14 am (local time) on the entire island of São Miguel. The earthquake’s epicenter, V/VI on the modified Mercalli scale, was on the Grande Norte fishing bank east of São Miguel. The earthquake was most felt in the municipality of Povoação. The Povoação Volunteer Fire Brigade did not register any incidents. There is no damage to report.

The parishes where the earthquake was also felt were Livramento, Rosto do Cão (São Roque), Lagoa, Ponta Garça, Furnas and Povoação.

It was less intense in the parishes of Santa Bárbara, São Pedro, Vila do Porto, on the island of Santa Maria; Lomba da Fazenda, Salga, Arrifes, Capelas, Covoada, Fajã de Baixo, Fajã de Cima, Fenais da Luz, Feteiras, Ginetes, São Sebastião, São José, São Pedro, Relva, Livramento, Santa Bárbara, São Vicente Ferreira, Maia, Porto Formoso, Rabo de Peixe, Conceição (Ribeira Grande), Matriz (Ribeira Grande), Ribeira Seca, Ribeirinha, Santa Bárbara, São Brás, Água de Alto, Vila Franca do Campo (parishes of São Miguel and São Pedro.

At around 8.33am, there was a second earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 south of São Miguel off Vila Franca do Campo.

At 8.59 a.m., a second earthquake, this one with a magnitude of 2.33, also occurred south of São Miguel off Vila Franca do Campo. The population did not feel this earthquake.

A second earthquake occurred at around 10.49 a.m. with a magnitude of 3 in Banco Grande Norte, at a depth of 5 kilometers, which was not felt by the population (IPMA information).

There are dozens of aftershocks to the 5.2 magnitude earthquake east of São Miguel on the Great North Bank (CIVISA information).

Seismic activity not felt by the population is also being recorded in the Povoação Trench.
