The National Genealogy Colloquium occurs in Angra do Heroísmo between May 8th and 10th.
The Portuguese Genealogy Association (APG) promotes the event in partnership with the Historical Institute of Terceira Island, with the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo supporting it and the Angra do Heroísmo Museum collaborating.
“For three days, speakers, participants and guests from all over the country and abroad, many specialists in genealogy and family history, will have the opportunity to give scientific presentations, as well as exchange views and debate experiences on various topics in areas as diverse as royal lineages, local history, Portuguese expansion, the applications of genetics to genealogy or the impact of artificial intelligence on research in this area,” said the APG in a note sent to DI.
The opening ceremony will occur at 6 p.m. on May 8 at the Angra do Heroísmo Town Hall. It will include speeches by representatives of the official entities present and a brief address by the APG president on the importance of genealogy and family history in today’s world.
The working sessions will occur at the Angra do Heroísmo Museum on May 9 and 10.
Three sessions are scheduled for May 9. The first session will cover the topics of “Parish records and their contribution to the family histories of two inhabitants of the village of Porto Judeu” and “Pedro de Valdés: a 16th century Spanish soldier in Terceira linked to Asturian genealogies”, followed by a guided tour of the Angra Museum.
In the afternoon, the second session will cover the topics of “The Almanach de Gotha – what it was and how important it was”, “(More than) 150 years ‘hands on’: the origins of the Cramez family (Casa Lapão, Vila Real) and ‘Lines of Succession of the Kings of Portugal’.
The third session will cover the topics of “DNA versus presumption of paternity in nobiliary succession. A practical case”, ‘An alternative tree in FamilySearch’ and ‘The future of genealogy and the use of AI tools.
The fourth and final session will take place on May 10. It will cover the topics of “Jorge Colaço, ou a persistência de um nome” (Jorge Colaço, or the persistence of a name), “O Caso da Mãe Joana: homonymy, deuteronymy, and the mystery of the erasure of two of Miguel Torga’s family registers” and “Uma linha matrilinear do centro interior de Portugal: Descobertas a partir de um teste de ADN mitocondrial” (A matrilineal line from the central interior of Portugal: Discoveries from a mitochondrial DNA test).
Jorge Forjaz is also scheduled to present “A Genealogist’s Testimony to the Portuguese Empire”.
After the conference, participants will take a field trip to the historic center of Angra, which genealogist Jorge Forjaz will lead.
