The marina at the Port of Lajes das Flores, which was heavily affected by Hurricane Lorenzo’s passage in October 2019, will undergo a major overhaul, with completion scheduled for October 2026—seven years after the destruction of the Port of Lajes das Flores. The Regional Government of the Azores confirmed this in response to a request submitted by members of the Chega/Açores parliamentary group.
The contract to rebuild the nautical recreation center (NRN) is part of the wider project to rebuild the Port of Lajes das Flores, which has already been awarded. The planned work includes the installation of new walkways, access ramps, fingers, and support equipment, such as a fishing support crane, access control gates, mooring bollards, and multi-purpose modules with electrical sockets and water points.
Since 2019, after the destruction caused by the hurricane, the marina’s infrastructure has been inoperable, suspending all services, namely boat parking and waste management. As a result, no income has been generated since that year, in contrast to previous years, when annual revenue of between 10 and 17 thousand euros was recorded.
Portos dos Açores’ initial priority was to guarantee the continuity of the supply of goods to the Florentine population. Three significant interventions have already been carried out to this end, including emergency works and the construction of new quays, for a total investment of over 46 million euros: The Emergency Protection Contract for the Port Embankment and Pier at -5m (Zh) of the Port of Lajes das Flores, as part of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo (€20M); the Construction Contract for a Quay Bridge in the Port of Lajes das Flores, also as part of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo (€20M); and the Contract to Reinforce the Port of Lajes das Flores, as part of the damage caused by Depression Efrain (€6M).
