Several hundred faithful flocked to Funchal Cathedral today to commemorate the resurrection of Christ. Among these hundreds of Catholics were many foreigners.
The Procession of the Resurrection, at 10.30am, was preceded by moments of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
The procession left the Cathedral and headed towards the Bank of Portugal, returning to the church.
Presided over by the Bishop of the diocese, D. Nuno Brás, the procession was attended by dozens of people, but far fewer than in the past, when thousands participated in the Easter ceremonies at Funchal Cathedral.

The Easter Mass began immediately afterwards. Bishop Nuno Brás reflected on the events of two thousand years ago, involving Jesus, the apostles, and the women who accompanied him to the cross, to discuss hope and faith.
The bishop highlighted the ‘light’ and John, the disciple who had the discernment to understand what was at stake and that Jesus had not been stolen (the body), but resurrected
“John couldn’t even imagine how his life would be changed, transformed forever.”
“And yet he saw and believed. At that moment, his life was no longer simply driven by how much he had already lived, by what he had achieved in the past. And it was much more than the present moment: from the future, a unique certainty emerged, a greater reality on which to base his existence, his days, his choices, his freedom. He could walk towards it with confidence and determination.”
