The CDU’s lead candidate for the Azores constituency in the May 18 legislative elections, António Salgado Almeida, argued that it was “urgent” to redevelop the Lameirinho neighborhood in Angra do Heroísmo.
António Salgado Almeida was campaigning in Terceira this week, accompanied by the PCP’s regional coordinator, Marco Varela, and other candidates and activists from the local CDU.
The focus was on social housing, with visits to the Lameirinho neighborhood, the rental market, and the “growing difficulty” in accessing home ownership.
In conversations with people on the streets of Angra do Heroísmo, the candidates emphasized that “these difficulties, aggravated by the rising cost of living, stem from decisions made by the national and regional governments, which, in the CDU’s view, have hindered the island’s development and made life difficult for its people.”
António Salgado Almeida also called for the mobilization of voters, stressing that “in these elections, it is essential not to stay at home, but to vote for those who have always been on the side of the people, with consistency and a single voice, in the Azores and in the Republic.”
The candidate said that “the work of CDU elected officials speaks for itself and that the party has taken clear positions against measures such as the Land Law and the Rental Law, dubbed the ‘eviction law.’”
He recalled that “among the CDU’s proposals, the following stand out: expanding the supply of public housing and affordable housing, reconfiguring the IHRU as a central public body for the promotion of housing, and a commitment to public investment in housing, with an annual target of 1% of GDP throughout the legislative term.”
