The Angra do Heroísmo Municipal Council has installed radio communication structures for the Municipal Civil Protection Service in Pico Matias Simão, in Altares, and has paved the access road to the site.
“The local authority immediately invested in the acquisition of the land where the viewpoint is located and, at the same time, in response to the seismic-volcanic crisis, and installed radio communication structures and equipment for the Municipal Civil Protection Service, thus ensuring that this area of the island has fully functional radio coverage,” the Angra municipality said in a note sent to DI.
This investment” also allows local radio stations to install their transmission systems at this location.”
According to the municipality, ” to complete the investments in this area of Altares, the access road to Pico Matias Simão was electrified underground and paved with red bituminous concrete, maintaining the characteristics of the previous pavement but ensuring improvements in the parking area and accessibility to this tourist attraction in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.”

The site is “very popular with both residents and tourists, being known for its viewpoint with panoramic views over much of the north coast of Terceira and Graciosa, as well as for the green pastures that dominate the surrounding landscape,” emphasizes the Angra municipality.
According to Councilor Fátima Amorim, “the investment by the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo in Pico Matias Simão has enabled its acquisition, integrating it into the municipal heritage; improving accessibility with this paving and providing the population and visitors with better access to this tourist spot in the municipality.”
In addition, the councilor said, “it gives farmers much better access to their pastures.”
On the other hand, ‘it also guarantees radio coverage for the Municipal Civil Protection Service in this area of the island and the possibility of installing equipment for local radio stations, which, in the event of a disaster, ensures that there is an operational communication system in place,’ she added.
