Municipal Youth Assembly in Angra do Heroísmo debates the use of cell phones in schools.

As part of the activities promoted by the Angra do Heroísmo Municipal Youth Council, the City Council held the Municipal Youth Assembly, inspired by the model of the Youth Parliament of the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores.

The initiative took place on May 23, 2025, in the Sessions Room of Angra do Heroísmo Town Hall, with the theme “Mobile phones in the classroom, yes or no?”. For around 1.45 hours, two groups of young people argued for and against using cell phones in the school context, with time equally distributed between the participants.

Students from Escola Básica Integrada Francisco Ferreira Drummond, Escola Básica Integrada de Angra do Heroísmo, Escola Básica e Secundária Tomás de Borba, and Escola Secundária Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade took part. The audience comprised students from the same educational establishments, promoting dialogue and active participation.

Angra do Heroísmo City Council Councillor Fátima Amorim argues that: “This Youth Municipal Assembly is fundamental for stimulating critical thinking and civic participation among our young people, giving them an active voice in issues that impact on their daily lives. Promoting democratic debate from an early age is investing in the future of our community.”
