The President of the Azores Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, accompanied by the Regional Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, Paulo Estêvão, presided over the inauguration ceremony for the new Azorean Diaspora Councilors, held virtually as part of the Region Day celebrations, from the Praia da Vitória Town Hall.
Seventeen councilors were sworn in, elected by the Azorean communities in Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, the United States of America, Uruguay, mainland Portugal, and Madeira, as well as several other countries where the Azorean presence remains strong. Their mission is to represent the concerns, aspirations, and contributions of the emigrant communities to the appropriate bodies of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, strengthening the ties between the Azores and its diaspora.
The leader of the Azorean executive praised the role that Azoreans have played around the world over the generations, highlighting how their exemplary conduct and resilient spirit have contributed to the good name of the Azores beyond its borders. “Our diaspora is a living extension of the Azorean identity, carrying with it the values of our land and projecting them with dignity in their host societies,” said the President of the Azores Government.
Referring to the importance of community participation in Azorean public life, the governor praised the role of the Diaspora Council as a space for constructive dialogue, proximity, and involvement. He considered that this structure represents a modern expression of citizenship, based on a lasting sense of belonging, regardless of one’s geographical location. “We count on these councilors to strengthen the link between the Azores and their children scattered around the world, in a dynamic of mutual listening, legitimate representation, and shared construction,” he added.
The ceremony was held with sobriety and symbolism, marked by the oath taken by each councilor, in a moment of reaffirmation of their commitment to the Azores and to the values of public service. This inauguration marks a new stage in affirming the Azorean presence in the world, sustained by the contributions of citizens who, despite the distance, keep alive their connection to their homeland and are willing to serve the Region with civic spirit and dedication.
