The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ALRAA), Luís Garcia, yesterday warned of the need to ensure financial predictability for higher education institutions in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, stressing that “it is essential to ensure mechanisms that allow them to plan with confidence and carry out their mission with autonomy and quality.”
Without predictability, the universities of Madeira and the Azores struggle to plan their future. It is essential that we find a way to guarantee the financial stability necessary for their functioning and development,” argued the President of the Legislative Assembly this afternoon in statements to journalists during a visit to the University of Madeira. Asked about the role of the Republic in financing the universities of the Azores and Madeira, President Luís Garcia reaffirmed that “the responsibility for ensuring their financial stability lies essentially with the Republic, and a firm commitment to secure their future is essential.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged the significant effort that has been made by the Azores’ own government bodies, “which have contributed significantly to supporting and strengthening the University of the Azores.”
In parallel with this visit, this morning, the Presidents of the Assemblies of the Azores and Madeira participated, via telematic means, in the meetings of the Standing Committee and the Plenary Assembly of CALRE, at which the joint manifesto to be submitted to the European Commission on the new Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 was unanimously approved, a statement that brings together the consensus of the approximately 70 parliaments that make up CALRE.In a statement, the President’s office recalled that the visit of the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores to the island of Madeira is part of the strengthening of institutional relations between the parliaments of the two autonomous regions and the enhancement of the role of the institutions representing the political and administrative autonomy of the Azores and Madeira.
