The Portuguese Navy, through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Subcenter in Funchal (MRSC Funchal), together with the Maritime Emergency Patient Guidance Center (CODU-MAR) and the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC), coordinated today, October 3, the rescue of a crew member from the Liberian-flagged cargo ship “TCZEW,” which was sailing 90 nautical miles, approximately 166 kilometers, northwest of the island of Madeira.

According to a statement and contrary to what JM initially published in its online edition, it was the Navy that carried out the rescue of the victim.

The alert was received at MRSC Funchal by telephone from the shipping agent, informing that a 53-year-old male crew member of Indonesian nationality needed medical attention due to symptoms of dyspnea.

The ship sailed towards the Port of Funchal, where, at a distance of approximately three miles south, or about five kilometers, it was possible to transfer the patient to a vessel from the Funchal Lifeboat Station, which proceeded to rescue him to land.

According to JM, the ISN team rescued the victim, who was having breathing difficulties, a crew member of the ship. On land, at Pier 8, a Portuguese Red Cross ambulance was waiting to ensure continuity of pre-hospital care.

The ISN lifeboat arrived at the scene at around 3:30 p.m. The rescued crew member was immediately transported to the Madeira Private Hospital, where he was admitted to the Permanent Care Service (SAP) and remained under medical observation.

The Local Maritime Police Command took charge of the incident.
