The heavy rain that fell yesterday caused flooding on Terceira Island and a small landslide on São Jorge Island.
According to a source from the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA), flooding was reported in a house in Angra do Heroísmo. Still, it was not serious, and no injuries were reported.
On the island of São Jorge, there was a “small landslide on the road leading to Fajã dos Cubres,” in the municipality of Calheta, but it was “easily resolved” and had no consequences. The Calheta Municipal Council decided, however, to close access to the fajã as a precaution.
“Given the weather forecast for the coming hours and considering the occurrence of landslides, it is hereby announced that as of 12:00 p.m. today, October 8, 2025, access to Fajã dos Cubres is prohibited, and its reopening will be subject to assessment by the Calheta Municipal Civil Protection Service. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in contributing to the public interest,” the municipality said yesterday on its official Facebook page.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the islands of the Central group under an orange warning (the second most serious of three) until 12:00 p.m. today, due to forecasts of heavy rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms. The warning will be downgraded to yellow between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
According to the IPMA, the worsening weather conditions were due to “the approach and passage of a frontal system associated with a depression centered northwest of the Western group, with moderate to strong activity.”
