The Angra do Heroísmo Municipal Council held an awareness campaign aimed at the mayors of the municipality’s parish councils, within the scope of Municipal Civil Protection. The initiative aimed to coordinate preventive measures and reinforce and update essential skills in providing support, care, protection, and monitoring to the population, ensuring a more efficient and coordinated response in emergency situations.
During the awareness campaign, operational procedures, the legal and practical responsibilities of local authorities, the management of available resources, and the rules for using equipment and the communication protocols to be activated in different risk scenarios were discussed. The session focused on training parish councils, key entities in ensuring rapid and effective responses to the population’s needs. It should be noted that all parishes in the municipality already have Local Civil Protection Units in place, with the Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo having made a significant investment in equipping these local structures with the essential resources for an initial emergency response.
The Mayor of Angra do Heroísmo and head of Municipal Civil Protection, Fátima Amorim, emphasized that “the Parish Councils are the first line of action with the population, and it is essential that they are trained to respond in the best possible way—not only for the sake of readiness, but also for the sake of effectiveness.”
