City Councilor Amílcar Goulart Visits Eldora Bettencourt’s Nativity Scene in Ribeiras
On the afternoon of December 29, City Councilor Amílcar Goulart of the Câmara Municipal das Lajes do Pico visited the Nativity scene created by Eldora Bettencourt, located in the Canto area of the parish of Ribeiras.
In the Azores, the presépio is far more than a decorative element of the Christmas season. Deeply rooted in popular devotion and family life, it is traditionally assembled in homes and public spaces as a living expression of faith, memory, and community. Often handcrafted and enriched year after year, these Nativity scenes reflect local landscapes, rural life, and island materials, transforming the biblical narrative into a distinctly Azorean expression of belonging and continuity.
This particular Nativity scene, built with dedication and meticulous attention to detail, symbolizes the true spirit of Christmas by representing the birth of Jesus and conveying enduring values of family, sharing, and faith. It reflects not only the creativity and commitment of its creator, but also the importance of safeguarding cultural practices that bring people together and lend deeper meaning to the festive season.
During the visit, the City Councilor expressed his appreciation to Eldora Bettencourt for opening her home to the community and allowing the public to enjoy her work, reaffirming the Municipality’s recognition of citizens whose personal dedication helps keep local traditions alive and vibrant across generations.
The Municipality of Lajes do Pico extends its warm holiday wishes to Eldora Bettencourt and her family for a joyful festive season and a prosperous New Year, celebrating fellowship, closeness, and the shared values that continue to define and strengthen the community.
