The Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo marked the official start of Carnival season with a children’s parade that brought young participants into the heart of the city, engaging local public schools, private academies, and after-school programs from across the municipality.
Educational institutions were invited to take part and give children direct exposure to one of the city’s most enduring cultural traditions. Encouraging participation at an early age, organizers say, helps spark interest among younger generations and ensures the continuity of a celebration that is deeply woven into the island’s identity.
Angra do Heroísmo now stands fully prepared to celebrate Carnaval in earnest. Traditional danças, bailinhos, and comedic performances are ready to tour local clubs and community halls throughout the municipality. In the historic center, the Teatro Angrense will open its doors to welcome performing groups wishing to take the stage, reinforcing the vibrant cultural rhythm that defines this time of year.
Beyond its cultural richness, Carnaval also plays a meaningful economic role, drawing audiences into local venues and supporting small businesses across the city. “In addition to its great cultural wealth, Carnaval is an important driver of the local economy and must continue to receive our full support,” said Mayor Fátima Amorim.
