Carnaval is already being lived intensely in the municipality of Lajes do Pico, in a celebration marked by tradition, creativity, and a powerful spirit of community.
On February 12, the parish of Piedade hosted the lively Carnaval parade of the Ponta da Ilha School. The procession culminated at Curral da Pedra, where the traditional Bando da Burra was declaimed—keeping alive one of the most emblematic expressions of Pico’s Carnaval. Rooted in satire, imagination, and sharp social commentary, the Bando delivers its critique with wit and good humor, reminding the community that laughter can also be a form of civic reflection.
On Friday the 13th, the revelry continued with the grand Carnaval parade of the Basic and Secondary School of Lajes do Pico, joined by students, teachers, and staff from the Ponta da Ilha School. The procession moved through the village’s main streets, filling the town with color, music, and contagious joy.

Original costumes, characters drawn from the world of childhood fantasy, playful satire of contemporary society, and boundless animation once again affirmed Carnaval as a shared and collective celebration. The sparkle of masks, the smiles of children, and the pride of families lining the streets transformed the village into a living stage of festivity.
The engagement of the school community and families underscores the importance of such initiatives in preserving local traditions and strengthening intergenerational bonds. Through music, satire, and imagination, a cultural inheritance is kept alive—one that spans decades and continues to shape the municipality’s identity.
These celebrations reflect the vitality of the region’s schools and the essential role they play in the community’s cultural and social life. Amid laughter and applause, the festive spirit that defines this special season is renewed, reaffirming Lajes do Pico’s commitment to honoring its traditions and fostering moments that unite and inspire pride throughout the community.
