The Island Council of Pico met in the Noble Hall of the Lajes do Pico Town Hall to outline strategic priorities for the island’s development and to approve a memorandum to be presented during the upcoming Statutory Visit of the Regional Government, scheduled for March 2–4, 2026.
The session was chaired by Council President Eugénio Freitas, with Vice-President Terry Costa and Second Secretary Gilbert Machado in attendance.
During the meeting, council members debated and formally approved the memorandum that will frame discussions with the Regional Government. The document reflects the Council’s intention to take a more proactive stance in defending and strengthening Pico’s economy—anchored in its traditional productive sectors, tourism, and services. These areas were recognized as strategic pillars for generating wealth, creating jobs, and reinforcing social cohesion on the island.
Among the key priorities identified are calls for structural investments in transportation, infrastructure, public services, and economic development. Council members underscored that such investments are essential if Pico is to pursue a path of sustainable, balanced, and long-term growth.
The memorandum will serve as the island’s formal position as it prepares to engage with regional leaders on policies and resources shaping Pico’s future.
