The Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores on Wednesday unanimously approved a formal vote of mourning for the victims of the powerful storms that battered mainland Portugal in January and February, following the passage of Storms Kristin, Leonardo and Marta.

In the resolution, lawmakers expressed “profound sorrow” for the 18 people who lost their lives and extended heartfelt condolences to their families. The Assembly also conveyed solidarity with all those who suffered personal loss or property damage as a result of the severe weather.

The measure highlights the extensive destruction reported across several regions of the country, particularly in the Center, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, and Alentejo. Homes, infrastructure, farms and businesses sustained significant damage, while some communities were left isolated and essential services disrupted.

Given the scale of the human and material losses, the Assembly underscored the need for a coordinated and effective response to ensure recovery in the hardest-hit areas and a return to normal conditions. Lawmakers stressed the importance of providing adequate support to affected families, workers and the most impacted sectors of the economy, especially agriculture and other productive industries.

Beyond expressing grief, the resolution also recognizes the efforts of government officials, local authorities, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, security forces, members of the armed forces, health care professionals and citizens who took part in rescue, relief and reconstruction operations.

The Azores’ Legislative Assembly further noted that, as an island territory accustomed to facing severe natural events, the region stands in institutional solidarity with the affected mainland communities.
