The Brazilian stage comedy TocToc, featuring acclaimed actors Daniel Dantas, Cláudia Ohana, and André Gonçalves, will open the 2026 edition of the Angra do Heroísmo Theatre Festival, launching a three-week celebration of dramatic arts on Terceira Island. From March 10 to March 29, nine productions will take the stage at the Teatro Angrense and the Angra do Heroísmo Cultural and Congress Center (CCCAH), with most performances presented by theatre companies from Terceira.
“This festival is a clear affirmation of the municipality’s commitment to culture and to our local artistic community,” said Guido Teles, vice-president of the Angra do Heroísmo City Council, in a press release. “Our goal is to create the conditions that allow our theatre groups to grow, present high-quality work, and reach new audiences.”
At the same time, Teles noted, bringing recognized productions to the city strengthens Angra’s cultural identity and energizes the island’s artistic life, helping position Angra do Heroísmo as an increasingly vibrant center of creativity and performance in the Azores.
The festival opens March 10 at 9:30 p.m. at Teatro Angrense with TocToc, which returns for a second performance the following evening at the same time. Alongside the Brazilian cast, the production also features Terceira-born actress Sara Freitas, who has lived and worked in Brazil for several years.

The program continues March 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Teatro Angrense with A Viagem Artificial (“The Artificial Journey”), presented as part of the project Ilhas Desconhecidas (Unknown Islands), developed by the Atlantic Culture Promotion Agency with support from Portugal’s Directorate-General for the Arts.
On March 15 at 9:30 p.m., the theatre group A Sala presents O Chá das Freirias at Teatro Angrense. Five days later, on March 20 at the same venue and time, the Pedra Mó Theatre Group brings Entretém para 4 Mulheres (“Entertainment for Four Women”) to the stage.
The festival moves to the main auditorium of the CCCAH on March 21 at 9:30 p.m., when the company Cães do Mar presents Cabalhau.
Back at Teatro Angrense on March 24 at 9:30 p.m., the company Gerónima stages O Chão Começou-me a Faltar (“The Ground Began to Give Way Beneath Me”).
World Theatre Day, March 27, will feature a special tribute to the Azorean writer and playwright José Henrique Álamo Oliveira, a towering figure in Azorean literature who passed away in July 2025 at the age of 80. The performance, titled Álamo – A Palavra Encena (“Álamo – When Words Take the Stage”), will evoke the work and legacy of the writer from Raminho in a production presented by Teatrinho at Teatro Angrense at 9:30 p.m.
On March 28, the group Alpendre presents O Cultivo de Flores de Plástico (“The Cultivation of Plastic Flowers”), also at Teatro Angrense at 9:30 p.m.
The festival concludes March 29 with O Melhor de Três (“Best of Three”) by the Grupo de Variedades do Porto Judeu, closing the curtain on this year’s celebration of theatre in Angra do Heroísm.
