The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Luís Garcia, sent a letter this afternoon to the President of the Republic, António José Seguro, inviting him to preside over the solemn session commemorating the 50th anniversary of Azorean Autonomy, scheduled for September 4 at the headquarters of the Azorean Parliament.
In the letter—sent following the swearing-in of the new head of state—the President of the Azorean Parliament highlighted the significance of the milestone for both the Region and the country, emphasizing the Azores’ trajectory of political, social, and institutional development within Portugal’s constitutional framework.
According to Luís Garcia, the celebration of the 50 years of Autonomy represents “a moment of particular significance for the Azores and for Portugal,” marking five decades of progress and the consolidation of the Region’s political and administrative self-government.
Garcia also expressed his expectation that the President of the Republic will be able to attend the ceremony, stressing the importance of the occasion for reaffirming Azorean Autonomy and strengthening the institutional relationship between Portugal’s sovereign bodies and the Region’s self-governing institutions.
