“This is a space that brings to life a deep and enduring historical and emotional connection between the Azores and Maranhão, transforming memory into a living presence in the everyday life of the city,” said Paulo Estêvão during the inauguration of Praça dos Açores on Monday afternoon (March 23) in the Historic Center of São Luís.
The new public square was unveiled by the Government of Maranhão in partnership with Azorean representatives, bringing together local officials and residents in a ceremony that highlighted the long-standing historical and cultural ties between the two regions. Situated in a symbolic area of the capital, the space is designed to boost tourism, honor shared history, and expand opportunities for public gathering.
Governor Carlos Brandão emphasized that the project addresses a long-overdue recognition of the Azorean contribution to the region’s identity. He noted that the tribute underscores the role of immigrants in shaping the city’s social, cultural, and architectural fabric—particularly in the Historic Center.
“Today, we honor those who came here and helped found our island of São Luís and build everything we see around us,” Brandão said during the ceremony. “These historic homes and this beautiful legacy bear the imprint of Azorean hands, yet until now, that contribution had not received the public recognition it deserves.”
The Praça dos Açores project was carried out by the Metropolitan Executive Agency (Agem) in coordination with Azorean authorities. It forms part of a broader urban development strategy aimed at revitalizing historic areas and strengthening tourism across the capital.
The inauguration also included tributes to key figures in the city’s early settlement, including Simão Estácio da Silveira, who helped bring Azorean families to Maranhão in the early 17th century. The recognition reinforces ongoing efforts to preserve memory and acknowledge the Azorean influence on the region’s political and social formation.
Featuring modern infrastructure, the new square includes an elevated deck, parking, landscaped green areas, seating, pergolas, a playground, and a museum. Among its highlights is a sweeping sunset view expected to draw both residents and visitors for leisure, tourism, and reflection amid the city’s historic landscape.
Beyond its physical design, the square incorporates symbolic elements of Azorean culture, including references to the archipelago’s nine islands, a gateway inscribed with the names of early settlers, and the Azorean Memorial dedicated to historical preservation. Artistic clay panels depict the journey of immigrants from Portugal to São Luís, visually narrating a shared transatlantic history.
With its opening, Praça dos Açores emerges as a new cultural and tourist landmark—one that bridges past and present while inviting both locals and visitors to rediscover the Historic Center of Maranhão’s capital.
