Angra do Heroísmo is placing its next generation in the spotlight as preparations ramp up for the 2026 Sanjoaninas festival, one of the Azores’ most emblematic cultural celebrations. Scheduled for June 19–28, this year’s festivities carry added significance, marking the 50th anniversary of Azorean Autonomy.
Unveiled on March 29, the Royal Court—Séquito Real—features a group of young participants who will represent the spirit of the festival and take part in its traditional opening parade. Laura Meneses will serve as queen, joined by Afonso Costa as chief of protocol and Leonor Pereira as lady-in-waiting. Carmen Terra and Francisco Pavão will act as pages, while Inês Tonel and Margarida Fins serve as local dames.
The court also includes representatives from sister cities, underscoring the festival’s international ties: Lara Remédios (Évora), Maria Camacho (Funchal), Addison Capote (Tulare, California), Audrey Kaefer (Gilroy, California), Cláudia Xavier (Ribeira Grande de Santiago), and Micaela Borges (U.S. East Coast).
More than ceremonial pageantry, organizers say the Royal Court reflects the vitality of Angra’s youth and their role in carrying forward Azorean cultural identity. “The Sanjoaninas are a festival of the people, for the people,” said Vice President Guido Teles. “This year, as we celebrate what unites us as Azoreans, the young people in the Royal Court stand as a living symbol of that shared identity—and its future.”
