The City Council in Funchal, the major city in the archipelago of Madeira, today handed out the prizes for the 24th edition of the ‘Funchal – Cidade Florida ‘ competition, which this year had more participants than last year. This competition calls for residents to get involved in improving and expanding the municipality’s landscaped areas and promoting urban subsistence farming.

In 2023, 75 competitors took part, 10 more than last year, in the categories of Municipal urban gardens (25), Social urban gardens (8), Social housing gardens (13), Single-family gardens (6), Balconies, terraces and staircases (10) and Hotel units (13).

As the number of entries increased, so did the value of the prizes, which rose from a total of 6,600 euros to 7,200 euros. These prizes are primarily monetary and range from 150 euros to 1,100 euros. In the case of the Hotel Units category, quality awards are given.

The different award-winning spaces were the subject of a photographic exhibition on display in the Municipal Garden Auditorium during the awards ceremony. The exhibition will also be displayed in the Atrium of Funchal Town Hall until this Friday, October 13, 2023.
