Authorities on Pico Island have placed a 57-year-old man in pretrial detention following his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence and illegal possession of weapons in the municipality of Madalena do Pico.

According to a statement from the Azores Regional Command of the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), officers from the Madalena police station, part of the Horta Police Division, detained the suspect in flagrante delicto as part of an ongoing investigation.

During the police operation, authorities seized a Class D firearm—a shotgun—along with 71 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition. The suspect did not hold a valid license for the use or possession of the weapon.

Subsequent search and seizure actions led to the discovery of additional items, including another unregistered and undeclared shotgun, a spearfishing gun, an expandable baton, and a bladed weapon.

The suspect was brought before the court in São Roque do Pico, where a judge ordered pretrial detention as a precautionary measure while the case proceeds.
