SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Legislature is expected to vote today, June 1, on Assembly Concurrent Resolution 185 (ACR 185), introduced by Assembly Members Esmeralda Soria Macedo and Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, formally recognizing June 2026 as Portuguese Heritage Month in California. The measure will be considered by both the California State Assembly and the California State Senate as part of the legislative process.
The resolution also recognizes June 10, 2026, as the Day of Portugal and May 25, 2026, as the Day of the Azores, honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Portuguese Americans throughout the Golden State.
The measure highlights the deep historical roots of Portuguese immigrants in California, particularly those from the Azores, and acknowledges their enduring contributions to agriculture, dairying, fishing, business, education, public service, culture, and civic life. It also recognizes the importance of Portuguese-language education, cultural institutions, fraternal organizations, media platforms, and community traditions that continue to enrich California’s multicultural landscape.
If approved by both houses of the Legislature, the resolution will stand as one of the most comprehensive recognitions by the State of California of the Portuguese-American presence and legacy. It acknowledges a community of more than 350,000 Californians of Portuguese ancestry, the overwhelming majority of whom trace their roots to the Azores, while celebrating the continuing contributions of new generations to the civic, economic, educational, and cultural life of the state.

Relative to Portuguese Heritage Month.
The resolution declares the month of June 2026 to be Portuguese Heritage Month and recognizes June 10, 2026, as the Day of Portugal and May 25, 2026, as the Day of the Azores.

It further acknowledges the contributions of Portuguese fraternal organizations, Portuguese-language education programs, academic institutions, civic organizations, cultural and historical institutions, media outlets, and traditional celebrations such as the Holy Ghost Festivals. The resolution also highlights California’s sister-state relationship with the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the role of Portuguese Americans in public service, the arts, education, business, and the armed forces.
The California Legislature therefore, resolves that:
“The Legislature hereby declares the month of June 2026 to be Portuguese Heritage Month and recognizes June 10, 2026, as the Day of Portugal and May 25, 2026, as the Day of the Azores.”
