Sacramento: This legislative measure declares the month of June 2026 to be Portuguese Heritage Month and recognizes June 10‚ 2026‚ as the Day of Portugal and May 25‚ 2026‚ as the Day of the Azores. It further honors the countless contributions of the 350‚000 Portuguese Californians who are the bedrock of our state’s dairy industry.

For decades‚ Portuguese Americans have contributed immensely to California’s economy‚ culture and history.

In carrying out my family tradition of sharing food during the Portuguese Holy Ghost Festa‚ I presented a loaf of sweet bread from Pastry Delight in Tulare to each of my colleagues.

Brought to California by immigrants in the 1800s, the Holy Ghost Festa honors Queen Isabel of Portugal for her charity. The vibrant celebrations are famous for parades‚ crowning of festival queens‚ and sharing meals with family and friends.

As the granddaughter of immigrants from the Azores Islands‚ it was an honor to recognize our history and heritage in the Capitol.

Joining us in this celebration were Filipe Ramalheira‚ Consul General of Portugal and Diniz Borges‚ President of the California Portuguese American Coalition.
